Preserving Your Oral Health with Fillings

Dental fillings are a treatment that restores and protects teeth that have been damaged by caries or decay.

The process involves placing composite materials to repair cavities and preserve existing teeth. Once tooth decay sets in, addressing it as early as possible is essential to avoid deterioration. If a filling is not performed, the decay will continue to advance over time and may need more extensive and costly procedures such as root canal treatment. In some cases, severely damaged teeth cannot be saved and may need to be removed.

What is the Procedure?

BOOK CONSULTATION

Your dentists will start by numbing the tooth and the area around it, then removing any decay with a drill, air abrasion unit or a laser. The objective is to leave as much sound, natural tooth structure as possible. The cavity will then be disinfected and dried before a filling material (usually composite resin) is placed. Once the material has hardened, the dentist will shape it to look and feel just like a natural tooth.

How to Avoid Fillings?

Sugary foods and beverages that remain on the tooth weaken the enamel, which can eventually cause tooth decay. Drinking water after sugar intake can help neutralise the ph in the mouth. It is essential to consistently floss and brush your teeth daily to keep them healthy and avoid tooth decay.

Regular six-monthly check-ups with your dentist for preventative dental care are also important in preventing decay from forming and improving overall gum health.

Fissure Seals?

Occasionally, the molars' grooves and fissures are so deep that cleaning them is pretty tricky. This can make the area a breeding ground for bacteria. Hence fissure sealants are recommended to seal the grooves and make cleaning the tooth easier, ultimately preventing decay from forming.
